Bizen Kuni Osafune Genbeijo SukeSada Saku 1532-1569

Bizen Genbeijo SukeSada was a representative smith of the late Muromachi period 1532-1569, having retained the rank of Jo-Jo-Saku his works are in great demand. Many of his works have retained the rank of juyo.
This fine sword has a cutting edge of 69.7 cm, the shape is wide and thick with deep koshi sori. The jitetsu is an itame/mokume mix with clear utsuri attached and ji-nie throughout.
The hamon is ko-nie deki with ample nioi scattered throughout. The pattern is a choji/midare with sunagashi ashi and ya. The boshi is midare komi.
This sword was purchased from a friend in Japan who stated that the previous owner a well-known Samurai family Abe, whose grandfather gave the sword to his father an officer in the Imperial Japanese Army in WWII. He then acquired the sword from his mother after his father passed away.
There is a silver medallion attached to the saya of the sword which is engraved with silver crossed hawks feathers which is the family crest of the Abe clan. Apparently, his ancient ancestors fought a battle against the 15-year-old Minamoto General Yoshii.
